How do you remove and replace ugly 1950s pink wall and floor tile in the bathroom? I have a ranch style home that was built in 1958. The bathroom is all original pink 4" x 4" wall tile, and ugly pink floor tile. We have read that we could just get a hammer and begin smashing until all the wall tiles are removed, and also do the same for the floors after the toilet has been removed. O.k., given that there will be a whole load of mess to clean up....what do we do next? The wall tiles emcompass the full permiter of the room and go up the wall roughly 4 1/2 feet. The upper portion of the wall is old drywall. If we remove all the tiles, will we able to use the base underneath the tiles to set new tiles. Or, if that is not an option, do we need to purchase new backerboard or greenboard and put it in place first. The same rings true for the flooring. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. If there is a less expensive do-it-yourself route to refinish the tiles, those suggestions would also be helpful and appreciated.

Can ceramic floor tile be used on my shower walls? I'm looking for the least expensive way to tile my 36" X 36" shower stall. The existing tile is covering 72 square feet of surface. I can get some great deals on good quality 12" X 12" ceramic floor tiles between $1.50 - $3.25 ea. This is far cheaper than a dollar each for 4" X 4" bathroom tile. Are there any reasons why I shouldn't use ceramic floor tiles instead of bathroom/shower tile? The installation would be identical, but far less expensive if I can do this. I'm looking for the best deal because I've discovered a huge termite/dry-rot/mold problem in the bathroom. The total cost of replacing the lumbar, drywall, tile, etc., is killing me, so must make all repairs myself. Thanks for reading this & for any help! Want black and white checkered tile garage floor - what type of tile should I use? I'm building a new garage, and I want to install a black and white checkered tile floor in a portion of it. What type of tile should I use? I know linoleum wouldn't work, it has to be a harder surface than that. I'm not looking for the interlocking rubber/plastic floor tile, I'm looking for tile that you actually glue down permanently. I wondered if asphalt tile is what I should use, but I've also heard that asphalt tile is easily softened by solvents and greases (which it is bound to see). I've looked at the epoxy coatings like ucoatit, and I'm still considering them. But, overall, I think the tile might be a better option. They're easy to repair / replace individual tiles, and they've got a classic appearance. Does anyone happen to know what type of tile would be best to use?

When laying ceramic tile floor in a bathroom, do you need to grout/caulk where the floor and walls meet? I am having a bathroom remodeled and the contractor that did the ceramic floor, put down wood baseboards and then durock before installing the ceramic tile. He then grouted everything, but he didn't grout or do anything around the edge of the bathroom where the floor meets the wall. When I asked about this to another of the contractors, he said that that area would be covered with the shoe molding and didn't need to be grouted. Is this true. Is this common practice or should the very edges of the rooom be grouted too or caulked or something. Is this just a matter of preference among contractors or did they miss a step?

How can an uneven marble tile floor be fixed? Our tile man installed too much mud on some parts of the bathroom floor (to compensate for a 125 yo sloping floor) which apparently caused some of the 12" polished marble tiles to sink more than others. The floor looks like crap and has sharp edges where some corners jut out. Besides tearing out the floor, is there anything that can be done to fix this? Can the floor be ground down & re-polished on the high spots? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
What can I use to cover an ugly tile floor with something that is durable, waterproof, and inexpensive? I have a porch with an ugly 12x12" tile floor. The tile has a texture to make it appear to be stone -- EXTRA ugliness! I need to do something to make it look better until I can afford to remove the tile and retile with updated materials. In the mean time, I want to make it look better. The constraints are that there is an in-ground hot tub in the porch, so water on the floor is an issue. Also, this is a porch that handles lots of foot and pet traffic between outdoors and our home's interior. Any suggestions?

What can I add to floor tile adhesive to make it set quicker on my old kitchen floor tiles.? I have made one bad attempt to tile my kitchen floor. The old tiles were as I said very old and ugly. The old tiles were not coming up easily so I read the adhesive instructions and it said it could be used to tile directly onto the old tiles. I did this and left it for a day before I tried grouting. The tiles had not set. I left it longer and longer and after a week I gave in and decided to gout. Even now the tiles were still moving. I foolishly thought the grout would help hold them in place. It didn't and now they look worse. To make matters worse I now have a puppy who lives in that kitchen most of the day. I need to redo the tiles but I need them to set quickly before the puppy wee's on them. I was thinking of just doing sections at a time but I still need it to set quickly. Short of using super glue (joke) what can I use?

Preparing WOOD subfloor for ceramic floor tile...? Despite tons of searching, I am not getting clear instructions on what I consider to be some very basic questions on how to lay tile on a wood subfloor. We have wood subfloors, with particle board on top of that and real wood floors. I know the wood flooring and particle board has to come up, so we are down to bare subfloor. Then what? 1) What is the best way to level the subfloor? Our floor is not even ( slopes a bit) and the 7.5" wood floor that is down now is VERY forgiving and we know tile is not. 2) If we use cement backer board, is that okay? The best? 3) If so,must it have expansion gaps like our wood plywood underlay did, or do you butt it together? If not do we tape these joints? If you have laid ceramic tile on a less than perfect wood subfloor, what materials did you use and detailed steps in preparing your floor right up until you laid the tile would be helpful and much appreciated!
Installing ceramic floor tile- how to handle floor vents? We are installing 16" x 16" ceramic floor tiles in the kitchen, bath and laundry room. We have 3 air vents on the floor that we need to tile around. No matter what layout pattern we have tried, all would require that we cut a triangle for all 3 floor vents. Is that even possible??? If so, what is the best and/ or easiest way to do that? What tools, etc. would be helpful too. Thanks. EDIT- My apologies! I have been up 20 hours ripping up old wood flooring and OSB. I DID mean to say RECTANGULAR. We DO have a wet saw, but I still don't understand how that would cut a rectangular, say approx. 11" x7" rectangle out of the center of a 16" x 16" tile. Am I so tired I am missing something??? LOL We have laid several thousand sq ft of wood flooring- even 7 3/4" very wide planks but even with wood that wide, you don't have to custout a rctangular peice in the center of your board, like will have to be done with the large tile squares. THANKS! Thanks but still don't see, or perhaps understand, the answer to my Q. Need to get 2"x10" & 4"x10 rectangles cut out of the CENTER, or very near center of 16"x16" tiles. NO, wet saw won't work & circular won't make a 2" cut. As mentioned- a U shape cut that could be done with either tool is not what we need due to layout options that work around all the other obstacles. Maybe I am not phrasing it right- How do we get a HOLE started in the center of the tile? Perhaps we could just nip away if we knew how to do that, BUT still, seems like a ton of nipping. YES, vents just drop in and any area we nipped would be covered- just need to know how to best get a center hole started- period. Are you saying theres a tool that could get a whole in the CENTER at least started?
Italian Floor Tile? I want to purchase approx. 400 square feet of floor tile in the San Antonio, Texas area. The tile that I am looking for is; Il MONTEFELTRO HSF10 P14G 5 1. I am looking for a vendor other than Royal Tile Co. Can anyone help with this??
Cant erase a floor tile in mid air on Sims 2...help? I have all expansions, i built a house, started to get sick of that and instead of moving and losing rewards or friends by changing lots, i just changed the house i had already built. But when i went to erase my back deck, one floor tile wouldnt erase. it actually looks like foundation with no bottom, ive tried everything, put a foundation over it then erase it that way, or a decking, ive just covered it with a floor tile, still wont budge.....i just cant get rid of it. and its getting rather frustrating. I ve even tried putting a coloum under it then erase the tile, nothing works. Does anyone have any idea how to remove this unusual tile? ive never had this problem b4, and ive been playing sims 2 since it came out. (cant wait for sims 3 hehehe) Yeah thats actually what ive done. lol just added another decking, i was just hoping i could fix it, its in an odd spot. Thanks for ur suggestion tho. xx

Should I seal high-gloss marble floor tile? I just installed 12" marble tile (it's a high gloss marble called creama marfil) on the kitchen and bathroom floors. I know the grout lines are supposed to be sealed, but is the high gloss marble suppose to be sealed too? I used some expensive stuff from Lowe's to seal the grout and marble tile, but it doesn't seem like it's doing a good job on the tile. In fact it came out a little dull on the tile. Before the tile was nice and smooth with a high shine to it. Now it's a little dull and not as smooth. Is there a trick to sealing high gloss marble floor tile? Or does it need to be sealed at all? I'm thinking that maybe I should just seal the grout lines and leave the tile unsealed? Thanks.
Measuring and cutting holes in ceramic floor tile? The bathroom tile in my recently purchased house isn't finished. The previous owner used floor tile to surround the tub; he/she left many pieces of tile unfinished, but luckily left us a stack of the tiles so we could finish it off. However, we don't have an unlimited supply of these tiles, so we'd like to get it right with as few tries as possible! I'm wondering: -I need to fit the tub faucet and knobs within two 12" square tiles. What's the best way to measure the placement of the fixtures? Is it possible to make some sort of template that I could transfer to the tiles? -Can I make the cuts for the fixtures using a hacksaw-type tile saw blade, or should I buy a tile drill bit? (I realize it rather depends on where the fixtures fall within the tile-- but if I don't need to buy both, I won't waste my money. ) Thanks!
Vinyl floor tile? I'm looking for an inexpensive floor for my kitchen. I'm leaning toward vinyl tile because I can install it myself quickly. Does anyone have any advice on installation. I don't want the corners of the tile to peel up in two months.

Can I carpet over asbestos floor tile? I was planning to have Home Depot install new carpet throughout our house (we have a baby on the way). I just had a piece of floor tile tested for asbestos. It is 25% asbestos, unfortunately. House was built in 1967, but my husband and I were young and just getting married when we bought the house (8 years ago), and though we had it inspected, apparently asbestos was not part of the inspection. The previous homeowners did not mention any possibility of asbestos (the house was "for sale by owner" too). They seemed like good people, but shouldn't they have said something about the tile? It seems suspicious that they had carpeted over this tile in two bedrooms, and the third bedroom has no carpeting at all, just those lovely tiles! And some closets have the tile too. Home Depot wants us to remove some tiles to tack down the new carpeting. Can't they just carpet over it like the other rooms were done? I know we can't afford to have the tile professionally removed. Thanks to everyone for your input. There seems to be some mixed answers. It's a tough decision to make, but the testing company said we could safely remove the tiles without disturbing the asbestos fibers. It's only if you grind or sand the materials will it become airborne. They gave us advice on how to seal off the area and prevent dust from circulating. Then we just throw the tiles in a bag and out to the trash. It still worries me, even though my husband is not a bit worried. I just want ALL of it out of our house. I'd rather get rid of it all rather than just cover it.
Can floor tile be reused? My wife sent me to pick up some used floor tile. It still has the stuff (plaster? grout? whatever?) on the back of the tile. Can this be reused? Do I have to get the old stuff off? It is on there pretty uniformly.
Is floor tile safe to use in an oven ? I'm not sure of the material but I believe it is ceramic tile. It has a pretty smooth surface and is heavy. The size was just right for fitting inside the oven and I've prepared a few pizzas directly on the surface. Is this safe ? I have heard that some ceramic pottery is not safe for use in cooking due to the material in the glaze. So is it known whether the floor tile is glazed in the unsafe way ? thanks
ceramic floor tile chips? I have a few chips in my ceramic floor tile. It's a light natural color tile, so the chipped part is dark and noticeable. Is there anything that you can put in the chips to cover them up?

Installing floor tile? I am redoing a floor in a bedroom I pulled up some old carpet and underneath is a wood floor but the carpet had been glued down. The only way I have been able to get it up was to sand it and still all of it did not come out it smoothed out but not off completely. Can I stick my stick on tile down on top of that or do I need to put down a primer first?
Can Wall Tile Be Used as Floor Tile? I am in the middle of doing a bathroom reno and I found some wall tile I really like. Can wall tile be used as floor tile ever?
Tiling pool bottom for inground pool...? (pool floor tile)? My husband and I are building a small rectangular pool and want to add some mosaic tile designs on the floor of the pool. Is there a good website that explains how this should be done or can anyone share some advice on pool bottom tile work? Is this going to be easy to do or something to leave to the professionals?
What paint for floor tile? What kind of surface preparation should I do and what kind of paint to paint over old floor tile? The tile are really stuck firm to the floor. Thanks,

Cleaning pourous floor tile? Any tips on cleaning floor tile that needs to be resealed? I've tried hydrogen peroxide and bakng soda, bleach, and Tilex. I want to get the tile cleaned once and for all so that I can reseal those suckers.
which is best for bathroom floor tile? Ceramic, porcelain, stone, marble? I want to replace the existing ugly linoleum/vinyl floor in my bathroom with tile. With the right information and tools, I don't see why I can't do it myself. Any ideas on the pros and cons of different types of tile? What's least likely to get scratched, and what is least likely crack and need to be replaced? Which is easiest to clean, etc.? I'm not crazy about a rough feel or look to the tile. So, I'm thinking of glazed ceramic or polished stone. Also, my bathroom is very small. I wouldn't need to use more than 35-40 square feet of tile. Do you think 12"x12" size tiles would look too big? Any tips or suggestions will be appreciated!
Got detergent in floor tile grout... how do I clean and get it out without ripping up the tile or grout? Was storing extra liquid detergent in our laundry room closet. Didn't notice but one of the bottoms must have had a leak in the seam of the plastic bottle. By the time I got to it and noticed just about the whole gallon was stuck on the floor in the back of the closet. Have dark blue and gray tile with dark gray grout. Cleaned it up and tried to scrub the grout with a brush, but it seems like the grout just totally absorbed alot of detergent into its pores. The grout is an even darker color where it was leaked and I can still get bubbles no matter how many times I scrub it. At this point I am just using a scrub brush and water. Is there something that will lift the detergent out with water that I can use to get it out? Short of ripping up the tile and or the grout, I would just like to get it really clean again and not sticky. Also it sort of leaked under the woodwork too so if there are any ideas with that too! Any suggestions and/or experiences would be helpful, thanks!!

Finding Cermaic Floor Tile patterns? We purchased a 12 year old house and some of the ceramic floor tiles are cracked and need to be replaced. Where can you find old ceramic tile patterns? Do I have to replace the entire area?
Help..I need advice. The refrigerator leaked and the floor tile came loose and then broke into several pieces? that I can't puzzle together. Some are missing. It is some old tile and it is not the shiny armstrong but these thicker tiles that crumble when they come up. A tile store once called them cheap, 20 year tiles). They are replacing my floor in two weeks and I don't want them to know I damaged it, but they will see it as everything has to be out of the kitchen. I may be able to take a similar tile from the storage area floor they don't see (I can replace that with similar color) . How do remove it and stick it to my kitchen floor. What kind of glue will stick. Shouyld I replace whole tile or try to cut it. Or is there is way to disguise the piece if I don't replace?. I don't care if the remodeling people see it is messed up, just when manager comes to video tape apt. and see all is moved out of kitchen (they are making us leave while they replace cabinets etc). Basically I am afraid of the landlady. I complained once when they came in once with no notice and broke my chain and she essentially called me a liar when I wrote a letter of complaint so I don't want to do anything to get kicked out as they do that easily especially if they don't like you at this place. I'll be moving maybe within 6 months. and just need to get through this remodeling ok as they have 4 days to snoop everywhere (and I heard they did and some people got kicked out). Sorry I diverted..just tell me how to fix the tile (remove and glue)..thanks to last two poster, they are replcing tubs, bathroom fictures and floors and kitchen cabinent, and floors. They are coming the day they want us out, changing the locks while we are gone 4 days in a hotel they put us in, and they videotape all our house so if we say somthing was stolen or broken, they have the video tape. It is a major job putting everything in boxes and sitching over appliances, This is subsidized housing, they rarely repair things well or timely and use cheapest stuff possible, I lived in the complex 20 years and they never do anything. never late on the rent once. I have been in this smaller unit only 2 years when my kids moved out, I had to move. They are acting like we are so lucky and they are doing this as a big favor and we should be so grateful. We are treated like dirt..my son used to call the landlady the gestopo..boy, is she mean..this new one s slightly better but was real rude and mean when I complained. I checked and none of the 4 of us in this wing got a notice. Three of us mentioned it when they came in unannounced, but the assistant didn't tell manager (or remember) and noone was brave enough to say anythig. This is the fourth time they did this..once breakig through a bedroom upstairs window with NO notice while I was sleeping nude in the next room. I finally wrote all this out and gave her an official tneant compalint form do not entrer my apt unannounced again..I think she thought I turned her in as she did not read the letter at my appointment just skimmed it and got real rude and said she is absolutely positive it was placed on the door as noone else complained. This place suc s. As far as tile, not sure if it is 290 years old/that means it is supposed to last 20 years. My other place hre was but his apt it a slightly different tile. The problem is the kitchen is real small only a three foot tile section with all cabinets and stove and refrigeraton along the wall. Because no washer dryer hookup, I moved refrierator sideways in the hall like section and put the mini washer where refrigerator was to hook to sink. They never said this was a problem but it is not the tile under the refrigerator but right in front o it..when I move refrigerator in the living room (which I have to do jut I own it), this spot will be very apparent. Plus I burned my carpet today so I'm real wooried..tried to fix that (better but noticeable) I'm scared to death of these people. They are apparently snooping through all the drawers and closets as some woman got kicked out for having drugs in the house and the drugs were hiddden in a drawer so the only way they knew is snooping through her stuff. I don't have anything illegal but I don't like the thoguht of them having all this access to my stuff and lots of time to go through everything. It is stressful.
non-repeating tile pattern using 4"x8" floor tiles? I saw a pattern that used rectangular tiles where each tile was laid in a different direction so that the pattern would not repeat itself anywhere on the floor.
is there a use for used floor tile? We recently put done an expensive tile in the kitchen, since the floor cracked beneath it (didn't use the backerboard because they said we didn't need it as long as it was a solid floor beneath) the tiles all needed to come up. Luckly we have 3 boxed of tiles we can use somewhere else like the bathroom or laundry room. What to do with the tile we pulled up? Set it out to the trash, ebay, salvage it? Let us know if there is a use for it (I am not into crafts right now).
